I have just finished reading The Frozen River, about real life Martha
Ballard and her diary entries from after the revolution in Maine.

For historical fiction readers out there Im both recommending this book
about real life Marth Ballard [mid to late 1700s] , and alerting you to
another woman's story in song [Maggie brooks, post civil war] for the next folk plus, Sunday at 2pm.

An hour of songs about journals, words, and writing are the focus of the
next folk plus on WJFF sunday at 2pm.  Enjoy some warmth somewhere and
stream the hour to feel like your life doesnt have it so rough.  Valerie
smith is a bluegrass musican who obtained her great great grandma's diary,
and she created music to expand on the entries. The songs document her hard life after the civil war.


These two women's lives are able to be understood and shared because of their dedication to keeping a diary of their times.

The songs are about how diaries give you a peek at someones feelings and
lives, and some songs about the difficulty of writing, and the importance
of words. I added a new song, not about diaries, but well written called
the ballad of husker scruggs "what you do to the least of us, you do unto me".

and both sides of the Delaware river.
